Mahjong solitaire — a classic in your browser

Mahjong solitaire (also known as Shanghai or Mahjongg) is a calm puzzle of attention and planning. The board holds 144 tiles of the traditional Chinese set: dots, bamboo, characters, winds, dragons, flowers and seasons. Your goal is to clear the board by removing matching pairs.

Start playing right away — no sign-up, download or install. An unfinished game is saved automatically, so you can close the tab and continue later. If you run out of moves, shuffle the remaining tiles or undo a few moves: every deal is guaranteed to have a solution.

How to play

  1. 1

    Find a pair

Look for two identical tiles. Only free tiles can be removed — nothing on top and the left or right edge open.

  2. 2

    Remove it

Click both tiles one after another — the pair disappears and new tiles open up beneath.

  3. 3

    Clear the board

Remove every tile. If no pairs are left, shuffle the board or undo recent moves.

Mahjong tiles

Dots — the suit of circles (coins), from 1 to 9.
Bamboo — bamboo sticks; the one is traditionally shown as a bird.
Characters — Chinese numerals from 1 to 9 with the character 萬 ("ten thousand").
Winds and dragons — the four cardinal directions and three dragons: red, green and white.
Flowers and seasons — any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season.
